The IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology) set out the guidelines on frequency of testing in the 17th Edition Wiring Regulations. It is important to remember that fixed wire testing is a legal requirement that should be completed at intervals of either 1, 3 or 5 years depending on the environment. In their table, The IET Guidelines for Frequency of Testing, also suggests ‘routine checks’ between formal inspections to determine any immediate or dangerous problems. So what are the options for a routine check?
The IET defines a ‘routine check’ to be a visual inspection but thermal imaging could be an option worth considering. Thermal Imaging is a more accurate and safer form of routine checking. Inspections can reveal more than a visual test. A regular programme of thermal imaging as part of routine maintenance can highlight potential problems long before any event. As a result any required repairs can be planned for in terms of both time and budget.
Thermography involves the use of a thermal imaging camera to check that each circuit breaker or distribution board is not overheating or showing signs of being under pressure. This could ultimately save lives until your next mandatory test date as it can be an invaluable resource for predictive maintenance.
