A school in the UK has banned birthday cakes amid Health and Safety concerns. Teachers say allergy sufferers could be in danger and it’s not worth the risk.
Staff at Norbreck Primary Academy in Blackpool have complained that they no longer have the time to check a birthday cake is “safe” for youngsters to eat. The new rules mean any pupils bringing a birthday treat to share with their friends, will be ordered to send it home uneaten.
Head teacher Karen McCarter told parents she “hates to be a killjoy”. However, she said: “I appreciate this is sad but in our modern society, in which we are held accountable, we cannot take the risk.” She also said youngsters with allergies were being “left out.”
Mrs McCarter added: “Historically birthdays cakes were brought into school on a very rare occasion, once or twice a year, but now it is happening on a much more regular basis that it is disrupting the school day. I am sure that parents appreciate that a teacher’s time is best spent educating their children rather than cutting up cake, handing it out and cleaning up afterwards. Also as many cakes are home-made the ingredients are unknown which could potentially lead to problems for children with allergies.”
